August 25, 2015
On behalf of the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, our Board of Directors, staff and countless volunteers, thank you for your membership and involvement. I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer. We had some great events in August, and September will feature some of our biggest annual programs. There is always an opportunity for you learn something, network and help us recognize outstanding leaders.

Leadership Lab Update
On August 12, I had the opportunity to speak to the 2015 Leadership Lab class during their sixth session, hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio. I thanked the class for their commitment to the North Chamber and for their participation in one of our most important programs. Leadership Lab is a critical tool for building the skills and knowledge to help our members become leaders in their organizations, the business community and our city.

The Leadership Lab program is the North Chamber’s award-winning and innovative approach to leadership development and workforce preparedness targeted to San Antonio’s up-and-coming business leaders from the corporate, non-profit and small business environments. The nine-month training course is based on the most current thinking, research and best practices in leadership development focusing on five core elements including: professional performance, leadership, management, community service and self-awareness.

The series requires attendance at nine sessions beginning with a two-day, overnight retreat and eight (8) full-day sessions monthly thereafter. The course culminates in a graduation ceremony at the end of the year.

The class of 2015 has now completed the sixth of their nine-month course and are well on their way to graduation. With topics ranging from Integrity and Culture, High Performance Leadership, Leader as a Communicator, Negotiator and Decision Maker; the class of 90 students have been enlightened with information and tools to bring back to their respective organizations.

The program is not only known for their amazing speakers, but great sites that host over 100 students. Thank you to the University of the Incarnate Word, SeaWorld San Antonio, Bank of America and Texas A&M San Antonio for serving as host sites this year. The remainder of the course will include sessions addressing change, community, marketing and featuring special guests Mayor Ivy Taylor, Commissioner Kevin Wolff, Peter Holt, Jr., and many more.

The class wraps up in November with some special surprises and a graduation ceremony for the participants and their guests. I want to recognize Melodye Tomsu with SpawGlass Contractors, who has done an excellent job chairing Leadership Lab this year. We are now accepting applications for the Class of 2016.

City Council Reception
On August 6, the North Chamber – in partnership with the Hispanic Chamber and Frost Bank – hosted a reception for the 2015-2017 San Antonio City Council at the Plaza Club. The Mayor and almost every councilmember attended, and we had a great turnout from all host organizations. The event included remarks by Mayor Ivy Taylor, Frost Bank Chief Banking Officer Paul Bracher, Hispanic Chamber Chair Al Aguilar and myself.  Councilmembers expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to visit with the leaders of the business community in a more intimate setting. We are very grateful to Frost Bank for their generous sponsorship of the event and the opportunity for our members to meet Frost leaders like Mr. Bracher and Frost/Cullen President Phil Green.
