The world’s first theme park designed with special-needs individuals in mind and built for everyone’s enjoyment – Morgan’s Wonderland – will launch its eighth season at 10 a.m. Friday, March 3, with a special event and special guests.
Opening-weekend hours will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 3; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 4; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 5.
Throughout opening day, the Senior Expo sponsored by First Friday Network will be held in the Morgan’s Wonderland Event Center and will showcase approximately 80 vendors that offer products and services primarily for senior citizens.
In addition, Miss San Antonio 2017 Emma Faye Rudkin and Mrs. South Texas International 2017 Marcella FitzSimon will greet guests at the entrance to Morgan’s Wonderland from 10 to 11 a.m., sign autographs and pose for photos.
Following closely on the heels of opening weekend, Morgan’s Wonderland will be open the weekend of March 10-12 as well as spring break, offering special entertainment daily March 13 through 18.  For the latest on park days and hours of operation, admission information and special events, visit www.MorgansWonderland.com.
“Spring break will see the return of our popular ‘Music, Mutts, Magic and More!’ entertainment lineup,” said Nikki Young, Morgan’s Wonderland entertainment director.  “Our guests will get to enjoy more music from artists all across San Antonio, plus more mutts such as therapy dogs and acrobatic dogs from Andrea’s Flying Canines.
“The Astonishing Mr. Pitts will perform magic along with his puppet sidekick Hartman, and there’ll be puppet shows, chances to dance and opportunities to interact with Morgan’s Wonderland characters such as butterfly mascot Joy and our park’s super-hero team – the Wonder Squad – that doesn’t let physical or cognitive challenges slow them down a bit.”
The park’s 2017 opening will serve as a prelude to the dedication this spring of Morgan’s Inspiration Island, the world’s first ultra-accessible splash park that’s nearing completion next to the theme park.  Details about the opening of the new addition will be announced soon, said Ron Morander, Morgan’s Wonderland general manager.
“Time has really flown since April 10, 2010 when Morgan’s Wonderland celebrated its grand opening,” Morander said.  “Since then, we’ve welcomed more than a million guests from all 50 states and 65 other countries.”
Morgan’s Wonderland offers more than 25 attractions including wheelchair-accessible rides, playgrounds and gardens for the enjoyment of guests young and older.  Last year, the park added to its array of rides with the debut of Whirling Wonder, a five-and-a-half-story Ferris wheel that gives riders a panoramic view of Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island.
Situated in the former Longhorn Quarry, Morgan’s Wonderland is the center of a family fun destination now known as Wonderland, Texas that includes The Academy at Morgan’s Wonderland, a school for students with special needs next door to the theme park, and the Children’s Rehabilitation Institute of Teleton USA (CRIT USA).
The inspiration for Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island came from philanthropists Gordon and Maggie Hartman’s 23-year-old daughter Morgan.  Her soaring spirit despite personal challenges sparked within them a deep desire to create a haven not only for those with special needs but also for their families, caregivers, invited friends and the general public.
“Inclusion is the overarching objective for Morgan’s Wonderland,” Gordon Hartman explained.  “The same is true for Morgan’s Inspiration Island.   Our vision is to play an instrumental role in helping establish more ultra-accessible family fun parks throughout the nation and the world.”
Morgan’s Wonderland is located in Northeast San Antonio a half-mile west of IH 35 at the intersection of Wurzbach Parkway and Thousand Oaks Drive.  In addition to visiting the park’s website, interested individuals can call (210) 495-5888 for more information.
