In partnership with the Catch a Special Thrill (C.A.S.T.) for Kids Program, CPS Energy hosted approximately 40 youth from Any Baby Can of San Antonio for a fun and exciting day of fishing and outdoor activities on Saturday, June 6.

A small cove near the Calaveras Lake Pier was netted and stocked with 600 catfish donated by Texas Parks and Wildlife for this memorable catch and release event. Families enjoyed the great outdoors, games, good food and making new friends, all while learning more about the great sport of fishing. Boat rides, lunch and an award ceremony, where each child was presented with a picture of themselves and their catch of the day, rounded out the morning.

Calveras Lake, as well as Braunig Lake, located in southeast Bexar County, was built in the late 1960s to provide cooling water for equipment at nearby power plants. More than 250,000 visitors go to the lake to fish, boat, swim and picnic every year.

Launched in 2000, CPS Energy provides their community’s physically and mentally challenged individuals from United Way agencies, a fun-filled day of fishing.  Whether it is due to financial, health or time restrictions, families of children with special needs are often limited to the types of daily activities they can engage in.

C.A.S.T. for Kids is one of many community programs removing that barrier for families. It was designed to create an adaptive environment where children and adults with special needs could experience a day on the water.  C.A.S.T. for Kids will provide all of the fixings for a fun day on the lake; fishing poles, tackle boxes, bait and event t-shirts.

Any Baby Can is no stranger to the significance of community support. The organization wouldn’t be able to serve families at the capacity that they do without the support of their local community.  Any Baby Can is extremely grateful to partner with CPS Energy and offer this activity and resource to the families that they serve.
