Fiesta Royalty could be coming to the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
North SA Chamber Chairman’s Council member and director Kenneth Flores is a candidate for “El Rey Feo,” or “ugly king.” Rey Feo was created in 1947 from the idea based on a medieval Spanish tradition in which peasants elected one of their own, a common man, to be king. The League of United Latin American Citizens Council (LULAC) Council No. 2 developed the position to raise scholarship money for deserving, underprivileged local college students. Since its inception, the program has raised more than $5 million for scholarships - books and tuition, awarded to more than 3,000 area students across hundreds of area schools.
Rey Feo serves during Fiesta and throughout the year of his reign as an ambassador to advance higher education and service to one’s community by visiting hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and of course, participating in Fiesta events such as the Battle of Flowers parade.
This year, three prominent businessmen, including Ken, are raising money for the honor of serving as “El Rey Feo.” The candidate raising the most money between now and October 10, 2015 is declared the 2016 Rey Feo, with the runners-up serving as a crown designate for each of the subsequent two years. Each candidate must raise a minimum of $225,000 to qualify - and more than 85% of the money raised goes to the direct delivery of scholarships benefiting San Antonio area youth with an average scholarship award of $2,000 per person.
Ken is the CEO of Allegiance Environmental Services, a commercial cleaning company specializing in hospital housekeeping and janitorial services for healthcare, clinical, laboratory and surgical environments, as well as office buildings and construction clean-up. He is dedicated to serving his community, advancing education, practicing good stewardship and wellness. He is an alumnus of Mount Sacred Heart School, Tom C. Clark High School, and St. Mary’s University. He is also an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the North SA Chamber board of directors and the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation, which supports the educational activities of the LULAC Rey Feo Scholarship Inc. program, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.
To reach the financial goal of raising $225,000 for scholarships, the Kenneth Flores for Rey Feo campaign will be hosting a series of fundraisers and open houses. Please mark your calendar to meet the candidate at one of these upcoming events:
