San Antonio Board of BKD Foundation presents annual Community Pride Award to VisionWorks - Camp Discovery

On October 5, 2016, Nancy Ozuna, Partner, presented Joey Cavazos, Executive Director, VisionWorks, LLC – Camp Discovery, with the San Antonio Board for the BKD Foundation’s annual Community PRIDE award.

Ozuna had this to say, “Each year we ask our employees to nominate a charity they believe should be the recipient of our $10,000 award and to provide the committee with an example of how the charity helps and how they exhibit our PRIDE values.  Our PRIDE values encompass Passion, Respect, Integrity, Discipline and Excellence.”  After the nominees were identified, each charity’s representative visited with BKD personnel so that they could learn firsthand about each organization’s mission.  Afterwards, the employees voted and Camp Discovery was selected based on the nomination which identified Camp Discovery’s more than 30 year dedication to providing “a forever experience” for children dealing with cancer.

Ozuna, who also nominated Camp Discovery for the award, continued and said, “I became familiar with Camp Discovery after my niece and nephew began volunteering in college.  My nephew’s volunteer experiences led to his passion and career path as he is now a pediatric oncology nurse.  We became more intimately educated when one of our son’s friends was diagnosed with leukemia in the fifth grade and began attending Camp Discovery.  Now, my immediate family of five, volunteer the night before camp begins.  We have seen first-hand the joyfulness camp brings to children with cancer and why this is a “forever experience.”

Cavazos accepted a custom-made glass art work (Glen Andrews Studio:  Caliente Hot Glass) award and a check for $10,000.  Cavazos stated, “Camp Discovery is a place of hope. A place that a child battling cancer can come to and realize that they are not alone in their fight. A place where a child battling cancer can come experience other children and counselors who have survived this devastating disease. Without Camp Discovery, children from Central and South Texas diagnosed with cancer would not be able to have a traditional camp experience. Thanks to organizations like BKD, the children of Camp Discovery are able to attend a week long camp at no cost to their family. We are truly grateful for the support of BKD.”

Camp Discovery is a children’s oncology camp established in 1984 by the American Cancer Society (ACS).    In 2013 the ACS announced that it was no longer sponsoring pediatric oncology camps nationwide.  As a result of this decision, the ACS graciously offered VisionWorks the opportunity to place camp under their umbrella and they enthusiastically accepted.
