PS&Co. Celebrates 70th Anniversary in 2015

PS&Co. is celebrating 70 years in 2015!

Padgett Stratemann & Co., L.L.P. was founded in November 1945 by Sidney Padgett Sr. The firm began as the partnership of Aiken, Tucker, and Padgett in San Antonio, Texas.

Sidney Padgett Sr. received his CPA license in June 1942, and after he was discharged from military service in November 1945, Padgett fulfilled his life dream of establishing his own accounting practice. He recognized the need for good financial support services for the small businesses that formed the backbone of the San Antonio’s financial community. In 1958, Sidney Padgett Jr. joined his father in the practice and the firm was renamed Padgett & Padgett. At this time, the firm was located in downtown San Antonio.

In 1967, Ray Berend joined the firm as a third partner, and went on to serve clients at Padgett Stratemann for more than 40 years. In 1969, Padgett & Padgett merged with sole practitioner Malcolm Stratemann, and the four partners made up the firm of Padgett Stratemann. The firm’s name was once again tweaked in 1973 to Padgett, Stratemann & Co., L.L.P. and the firm moved to Northeast San Antonio.

The nature of the business has always focused on public accounting – tax, assurance, and business consulting services. In the early 1970s, Padgett Stratemann became one of the first local firms to focus on a niche strategy to service clients, and construction became the firm’s first niche. Today, the firm services more than 15 industry niches. During this decade, while a group of similar sized local accounting firms were merging with national firms, Padgett Stratemann remained one of only a handful of independent, local firms serving the South Texas small business and professional community.

As clients’ businesses grew so did Padgett Stratemann. The firm once again moved to a larger (and current location) in San Antonio in 2001. In 1992, the firm acquired the San Antonio Grant Thornton International office. In 2007, Padgett Stratemann entered the Austin market by merging with Sprouse & Anderson, an established Austin-based firm. The merger solidified Padgett Stratemann’s place as one of the largest regional firms within the state of Texas, with more than 180 team members. In 2014, the firm entered the Houston market, and has grown to more than 215 employees, including 33 partners.

Throughout the years, the firm has won numerous awards, including the Business Journal’s Best Places to work in both San Antonio and Austin, Business Ethics awards, Texas Lawyer awards, Community Partnership awards, and Healthiest Workplace awards. The firm consistently ranks in the Top 10 Largest Firms in both San Antonio & Austin, and top firms by Accounting Today and Inside Public Accounting.

The firm is proud to celebrate 70 years of providing Service More than Expected to the San Antonio and Texas community in 2015.
