About Respite Care of San Antonio
Respite Care of San Antonio's mission is to enhance the stability and the nurturing opportunities of families caring for a loved one with developmental disabilities and/or complex medical diagnosis. It was founded in 1987 with the goal of providing temporary respite services to families caring for a child with developmental disabilities. In 1997, it opened the Davidson Respite House Emergency Shelter, the state’s first and only shelter licensed to provide temporary care for children with developmental disabilities or complex medical diagnoses who are taken into state protective custody. The Najim Family Respite Home, an additional emergency shelter, opened in June 2010, increasing emergency shelter capacity by 50%. In late summer of 2006, Respite Care of San Antonio received licensing to serve as a foster placement agency for the children with special and habilitative needs who come to them in the state’s protective custody. Respite Care is able to use the insights gained while children are in their care in the emergency shelter program to secure the appropriate foster home environment for children, as well as provide training to the foster parent(s) and support through its services and programs. The Tracy Wolff Respite Home, the HEB Respite House, and Mr. B’s Place are located adjacent to the shelters and serve as transitional foster homes for children in need of safe haven.  These homes allow a greater number of children to receive care by transitioning children from the shelters as they begin to heal and recover.
In addition to the varied residential service options, Respite Care operates a Developmental Daycare, Mothers Day Out, Family Day Out, and Parent’s Night Out services at locations throughout the city. The programs are available for children with developmental disabilities and complex medical diagnoses, as well as their siblings.
