A winding path through native live oaks and flowering gardens bursting with color, the scent of flowers and herbs lingering on the breeze as you notice the peaceful sound of birds chirping and whistling as they flitter by. As an antique star windmill spins along, you notice a welcoming front porch lined with rockers beckoning you to make yourself at home. Go right ahead—you’ve arrived at Windflower – The Hill Country Spa, where you’re more than welcome to settle in for a tranquil retreat. The worries and cares of daily life drift away as you step into the farmhouse that serves as Windflower’s entry and are transported to another time and place—one where you are relaxed, rejuvenated and feeling your best.

Not what you picture when you think of a spa visit? Then you need to picture yourself at Windflower – The Hill Country Spa at Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa. Wrapped in the charm and allure of a 19th century Texas Hill Country homestead, Windflower is a refreshing way to slow down and step back in time as you enjoy a first-class spa experience unlike any other, secluded in a setting that provides a true getaway, whether you’re in search of a quick beauty boost or an extended retreat from the hustle and bustle that fills your calendar. Windflower – The Hill Country Spa is a peaceful sanctuary featuring the finest spa services for both resort guests and Alamo City locals.

There’s no doubt as to why Windflower has been named by Condé Nast Traveler readers as one of the top 100 resort spas in the United States. This is no run-of the-mill cookie-cutter, institutional spa—Windflower’s comforting setting truly welcomes you home to unwind and rejuvenate both body and soul. With Windflower’s setting, you begin to destress just by walking up to the spa’s door. Windflower’s unique surroundings help your mind and body transition from whatever is on your to-do list to letting it all go for a few hours. After all, it’s only natural that a spa built to operate alongside the ultimate getaway of Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa provide the same welcoming comfort as the resort it calls home.

Built to Comfort
In a nod to Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa’s roots as a family ranch, Windflower resembles the farmhouses that once dotted the Hill Country. Featuring native stone and timber construction, the spa is a series of interconnected buildings, including a conventional red barn that feels as native to the landscape as the trees shading the spa’s private 20-meter lap pool and outdoor hot tub (something the farmers and ranchers of yesteryear could only dream of). The spa greets guests with a traditional front porch, complete with wooden rockers beckoning you to pause and enjoy the natural beauty that envelops Windflower, or lie in a hammock beside the pool and swing your worries away.

Twenty-three different salvaged buildings were utilized in creating the spa, giving it the rich, warm feel of a calmer time. The front porch invites guests into the farmhouse’s “living room”, which serves as the spa registration area and is home to Windflower Boutique, a retail shop filled with fantastic apparel, jewelry, gifts and spa products. Anchored by a native stone fireplace featuring a custom-made iron vine sculpture that seems to naturally grow around the stone, the room includes antique Texas longleaf-pine flooring from an abandoned drug store in Austin and distressed ceiling decking that was salvaged from a whiskey distillery, completing the feel that you’ve entered a cozy country home.

That feeling continues in the spa’s common areas, especially the Wellness Lounge, designed to be reminiscent of a closed-in back porch complete with antique pine rafters and stone walls. You can linger before and after your treatments while sipping a cup of tea or juice, curled up with a book or lost in conversation with good friends. Or step outside to the back porch, lounge beside a bubbling fountain and enjoy the natural scenery, as well as soundtrack of the birds nesting nearby. A Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the resort uses a custom blend of bird seed to attract songbirds who seem to enjoy the relaxed setting as much as guests do.

The comfortable décor extends to the men’s and women’s locker areas, which  contain saunas, eucalyptus steam rooms and oversized whirlpools surrounded by mosaic tile walls. Spa treatments take place in the homestead’s “barn” that maintains its rough-hewn exterior, but inside, a luxury experience pampers you in 21 treatments rooms that offer a feeling of old-fashioned, upscale comfort. With hand-sewn, locally-made quilts adorning the massage tables, you’ll be ready to slip into bliss and fully enjoy your treatment.

Pampering All of Your Senses
With Windflower’s unique setting engaging all of your senses, the spa’s treatments are designed to help those senses unwind to bring your mind and body to a truly relaxed state. From soothing music punctuated by an occasional overheard bird call, to the soft scents of the spa products that mirror the natural scents blooming outside Windflower’s doors, everything is relaxed and comforting. Add the expert touch of Windflower’s technicians and each treatment is guaranteed to help you find a blissful state while bringing out your inner beauty. That applies to male clientele as well—even the roughest rancher glows when given the chance to rest and relax.

Guests can choose from a menu of services including relaxing, deep tissue, therapeutic and hot stone massages, body scrubs, facials, pedicures and manicures, as well as couples treatments. Windflower’s services also include prenatal massages and massages for young adults (ages 14 and up). Aromatherapy and other treatments utilize indigenous herbs, botanicals, and elements of the Texas Hill Country to leave you feeling naturally refreshed.

The spa also features seasonal specials, such as body scrubs that match the season and often sound good enough to eat (Watermelon-Basil Vodka, Bourbon Bubbler, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Citrus Grass Soothing, Rasmopolitan, Honey Lavender, Butter Rum and more), and special treatments to give guests fun options to explore, such as “Wine Down Facials” that include an age-defying serum derived from Texas winery grapes is used to help diminish wrinkles, decrease pore size, and seal in moisture.

Featuring a full-service salon, Windflower offers more than standard spa services as well:  hair styling and make-up services are also available for booking, giving you the full beauty treatment while you’re surrounded by nature’s beauty just outside the salon’s windows.

For Windflower’s massage treatments, guests may select from four options:  the spa’s signature Windflower oil, unscented oil, Lemongrass or Peppermint, as well as occasional seasonal options.  All of the massage services use 100 percent  organic sunflower carrier oil mixed with an essential oil or essential oil blend, giving the oil a light texture that works well with all skin types. When compared to other carrier oils, Sunflower Oil has one of the highest contents of Vitamin E, a known antioxidant.

While the spa is named for the legendary blossom that eagerly sprouts to be the first wildflower to bloom in spring—also known as the Anemone, Buttercup or Ten-Petal—the spa’s signature Windflower scent is composed of a blend of lavender, grapefruit, orange, and chamomile. In addition to the Windflower oil used during treatments, Windflower products also available for use in the locker areas. Equally loved by women and men, the unisex scent soothes and calms, leaving a light reminder of your time at Windflower. Windflower massage lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and a scrub are available for purchase at Windflower Boutique.

Make it Social
Another aspect of Windflower that makes it stand out from other spas:  its inviting common areas that can be enjoyed on a private visit to the spa, or with a group, making Windflower a fantastic venue for a getaway with friends, a birthday celebration, pre-wedding pampering or some down time together before a new baby arrives. Spa guests may enjoy the use of the spa’s facilities before or after their treatments, giving you the perfect spot to enjoy a day away, even if you live in San Antonio. Want to create a unique escape? The Windflower team works with each group to create a customized experience, giving you a day like no other.

The spa’s shaded lap pool is an oasis of calm, with hammocks and lounge chairs welcoming you to enjoy some down time on your own or with friends, while guests can rejuvenate together in the saunas, eucalyptus steam rooms or whirlpools located in the locker areas.  The spa’s open common areas, such as the Wellness Lounge, featuring couches, tables and the spa’s coffee and juice bar—provide a terrific spot to unwind with friends, enjoy time together before or after a couples massage, or for a special get-together with friends or family. Pull up a rocking chair and take in the gorgeous Texas countryside from the spa’s back porch, complete with fire pits, making it a wonderful respite year-round, perfect to be shared.

While this social side of Windflower might seem unusual in today’s institutionalized spa world, it actually harkens back to the origins of spas:  the Greeks and Romans used public baths, or spas, as their focal center for social and recreational activity. So get back to the true nature of a spa and go social!
